National Visa Center: Pre-Processing of Your Visa

The National Visa Center (NVC) is the place where petitions for immigrant visas (or petitions for green cards) are sent after they are approved by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This center is located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The NVC handles pre-processing of immigrant visas at the appropriate times. These times may vary, depending on whether or not the visa has annual numerical limits (meaning only a certain number are processed in the U.S. each year). The NVC then does the following, according to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Consular Affairs:

Sends an invoice for the application fees
Obtains the petitioner’s visa application and supporting documents

Holds on to this application until an interview with a consular officer of the U.S. Embassy or Consulate can be set

There may be longer wait times for those who are trying to obtain immigrant visas that are subject to annual numerical limits. In addition to the visa application and supporting documents, the U.S. citizen who is petitioning on behalf of the foreign national will also need to provide an Affidavit of Support that proves his or her ability to financially support the visa applicant (the person who is seeking permanent residence).
